Vance L. Hopkins

Vance L. Hopkins, 95, of Westphalia, joined his ancestors on Sunday, December 28, 2014, at his home. He was born April 14, 1919, in Brunswick, Missouri, the youngest child of the late William M. and Nannie (Shannon) Hopkins. He married Marine Veltrop after many nights of dancing and singing at the Casa Loma Ballroom in St. Louis on December 8, 1945. They had three children: Cherie (Bob) Dupuis of Westphalia; Buzz (Sandy) Hopkins of Jefferson City; and Vonnie (Russ) Sharisin of Westphalia. Vance (Hopper) was proud of his Irish heritage and was known for crooning "Danny Boy" at social functions. He had the Irish love of argument, of humorous story telling, and of good drink. He owned Sunset Lake Lounge in the '70s and ended his working life as a much-loved bartender at Ecco Lounge. He loved sports and managed the Westphalia Wasp baseball team in the 60s and 70s. Vance was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia and Knights of Columbus. Vance is survived by his wife and children, 7 grandchildren; and 7 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 2 sisters, Lucille James and Elizabeth Therence; and 3 brothers, Norvell, George, and Kenneth Hopkins. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, December 31, 2014, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia with the Rev. Mark S. Smith officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Cemetery. Visitation will be 9-11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Westphalia. In lieu of flowers memorials are suggested to a charity of the donor's choice.
