THOMAS JOSEPH RYAN, M.D.

September 13, 1930 — June 14, 2006

Dr. Thomas Joseph Ryan, 75, of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, June 14, 2006, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 13, 1930 in New York City, NY, the son of Patrick Joseph and Anna Malone Ryan, who met in New York City after having both independently left their families in Ireland. He was married on July 31, 1954 in New York City to Marie Teresa Kelly who died on Sept. 12, 1989, whose parents also left Ireland under similar circumstances. A 1947 graduate of Rice High School in New York City, he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1952 from New York University and the Doctor of Medicine degree in 1956 from New York Medical College. Dr. Ryan completed his internship at Lenox Hill Hospital in New York and his residency in 1957 at Lackland Air Force Base as one of the first orthopaedic residents under that program. His chief was James T. Leslie, M.D., with whom he would later share his civilian practice. His collaboration with Dr. Leslie in filming a shoulder repair now commonly known as a Putti Platt repair was one of many highlights in his career. This cosmetic technique to shoulder surgery via the axillary approach would later be published in the Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery. Dr. Ryan was chief of orthopaedics at Wright Patterson Air Force Base and was later stationed as an orthopaedic surgeon at Evreux-Fauville Air Force Base in France. Upon completion of his payback years of service to our country, Dr. Ryan moved his family to Jefferson City in 1967 and joined what was to become a very respected and successful practice at the Jefferson City Bone and Joint Clinic. Dr. Ryan was a member of the staff and chief of surgery at St. Marys Hospital, Memorial Community Hospital, and Charles Still Hospital. He was instrumental in establishing a practice relationship with the osteopathic physicians by joining the staff at Charles E. Still Hospital to provide orthopaedic care to patients in Jefferson City and rural areas around central Missouri. Dr. Ryan was a member of numerous medical organizations including as a Fellow with the American College of Surgeons, the Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons, the American Medical Association, Missouri Orthopaedic Society, Central States Orthopaedic Society, Missouri State Medical Association, and Cole County Medical Association. There were many highlights in his career. He will long be remembered by his staff as the Jolly Irishman and we know his many patients benefited from his happy-go-lucky attitude as well as his medical expertise. He will always be remembered for his love of gadgetry and electronics. Survivors include two daughters and one son-in-law, Annamarie Kelly and Rick Zimmer, Leawood, KS; and Kathleen B.
