Sue Hughes, 86, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, August 9, 2016, at Heisinger Bluffs. She was born February 3, 1930, in Kansas City, MO, the daughter of the late Melville Hersey Lefforge and Opal Elizabeth Griffis Lefforge. She graduated from Central High School in Kansas City. She was united in marriage on August 22, 1950, in Kansas City, MO, to Francis Raymond Hughes who preceded her in death on January 3, 2013. Sue and Fran settled in Overland Park, KS, where she spent most of her life caring for her family as a homemaker. In the 1960's she worked for the Census Bureau. She was deeply involved in raising her children. She was a Cub Scout and Girl Scout Leader, and winter weather driver for the children's school car pool. She enjoyed sewing, playing bridge and cooking meals for her family. Later in life Sue and Fran spent several years RV-ing including trips to most of North and Central America. Subsequently, they bought a water front home at the Lake of the Ozarks where they welcomed friends and family to enjoy swimming and boating. Survivors include two children, Michael (Kathy) Hughes, Jefferson City; Marilyn (Tommy) Sommers, Kansas City, MO; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son and daughter-in-law, Mark (Laurie) Hughes; brother and sister-in-law, Donald (Shirley) Lefforge; infant sister, Katherine Ann Lefforge; and three grandchildren. Visitation will be 11 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, September 10, 2016, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Jefferson City. Mass of Christian Burial will follow at 12 noon with the Rev. Don Antweiler officiating. A reception will follow in Pleus Hall, next to the church. Private burial will be at a later date in Leavenworth National Cemetery with her husband. Memorials are suggested to your local animal shelter. Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangement.
