RUTH EDITH OBERLANDER

Ruth Edith Oberlander, 92, formerly of Jefferson City, died Monday, July 26, 2004, at the Forum at Overland Park, Overland Park, KS. She was born on October 4, 1911, in Jefferson City, the daughter of Philip Edward and Clara Helen Schleer Kaiser. She was married on July 1, 1933 to Harold C. Oberlander who died on March 27, 1974. Survivors include one brother and sister-in-law, Julius P. Bud and Salome Kaiser, Jefferson City; one sister, Gertrude Kaiser, Jefferson City; two nieces and their husbands, Ann Cowley and Ron Wallace, Mobile, Alabama; and Mary Martin and Ed Rackers, Jefferson City; six nephews and their wives, Charles & Joyce Kaiser, Jefferson City; Steven and Lavonne Kaiser, Houston, Texas; Mark and Debra Kaiser, Midland, Michigan; Dr. Michael Cowley, Richmond, Virginia; Dr. Steven and Ginger Cowley, Birmingham, Alabama; and Patrick Cowley, Hoover, Alabama. She was preceded in death by a brother, Edward F. Kaiser; and two sisters, Rosemary Zelder and Sophia Cowley. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 31, 2004, at St. Peter Catholic Church Chapel with the Rev. Donald W. Lammers officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. A graduate of St. Peter High School, Mrs. Oberlander was employed with Steinger Insurance Agency prior to her marriage. Ruth and Obie moved to Kansas City before World War II where he entered into the court reporting business. At the onset on the war, Obie became the personal secretary of James Forrestal, then Secretary of the Navy, and they lived in Washington, D.C. After the war, Ruth and Obie returned to Kansas City where she had many friends. She frequently hosted visits of her nieces and nephews. She was an avid gardener and loved to keep her lawn in perfect condition.
