Robert Clarence Osman, 83, of Cocoa Beach, Fla., formerly of Jefferson City, died Monday, Nov. 19, 2007, at Select Specialty Hospital in Orlando, Fla. He was born on Oct. 7, 1924, in Allentown, Penn., the middle son of Clarence Milton and Marie Lang Osman. He was married on April 12, 1947, in Allentown to Mary Lydia Brandmeier, who died on May 7, 1998. They were married for 51 years and raised 11 children. He was married on Oct. 6, 2001, at Blessed Sacrament Catholic Church in Clermont, Fla., to Kay Louise Adams Osman, who survives at the home in Cocoa Beach, Fla. with her sister, Rebecca J. Ramsay. Mr. Osman was dedicated to his family, his church and his community. After his retirement to Florida, he remained an active volunteer at the Veterans Administration facilities as well as with the Marine Corps League Brevard Detachment near Cocoa Beach. He and Kay enjoyed the beach, the library, movies, the Cardinals, visits from his children and other family members, and being able to share their faith. While living in Jefferson City, Mr. Osman was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and a Deacon in the Jefferson City Diocese. Ordained a deacon on May 7, 1977, one of the first in the United States, he served in many ministries. These included serving for Immaculate Conception parish for twenty-two years, as diocesan chaplain for the Boy Scouts of America, as a chaplain for three area prisons, as chaplain for the former Still Hospital in Jefferson City and the VA Medical Center in Columbia, as a chaplain for several nursing homes, and as an active adult leader in the Teens Encounter Christ movement in the diocese. Motivated by the Dec. 7, 1941, bombing of Pearl Harbor, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps after his 1942 graduation from Allentown High School. He served his country for over twenty years, including on Bougainville Island in World War II and during the Korean Conflict. Known as Gunny to his friends, he served as a gunnery sergeant and as an aircraft mechanic and avionics teacher on military bases. Impressed by the militarys recognition of Eagle Scouts, he became involved in the Boy Scouts of America, not only through the religious component, but also as an adult leader on the pack, troop, and council levels, and as a Beaver in the Wood Badge program. His teaching career in the military led to a second career for more than two decades as an electronics instructor in vocational schools in Memphis, Tenn., Brookfield, Mo., and at Linn Technical College in Linn, Mo. Known as Sarge to his students, he imparted not only practical knowledge but a love of learning. He exemplified this by obtaining his private pilots license and as a federally licensed Amateur Radio Operator holding callsign WAMXF. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus; Veterans of Foreign Wars; past commander and life member of Disabled American Veterans Chapter 17, and its social group, Trench Rats; past president and chaplain of Fleet Reserve Association Branch 380; past chaplain of Central Missouri Detachment of the Marine Corps League, and its military order of Devil Dogs; member of the Executive Committee and Women Veteran Advisory Committee of Veteran Affairs Volunteer Service; and a past member of the Cole County Sheriffs Auxiliary.
