The Reverend Monsignor Charles Hull Patterson, 85, retired priest of Diocese of Jefferson City, died peacefully Thursday, May 6, 2010, in Columbia.
Charles Hull Patterson was born on August 22, 1924, in Burnside, Illinois, the son of the late Carl C. Patterson and Louise (Hull) Patterson. He was baptized on September 14, 1924, at Immaculate Conception Church in Carthage, Illinois. He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Edgar Herman Patterson. He is survived by a number of cousins. Father Patterson attended public elementary school in Burnside, Illinois from 1930-1939. His high school education was at St. Johns Preparatory Seminary in Kansas City, Missouri from September 1939 until 1943, followed by two years of college formation concluding in 1945. He entered St. Louis Preparatory Seminary in 1945 and completed his philosophy degree in 1947. He then attended Kenrick Seminary in St. Louis in 1947-1951, receiving his Bachelor of Administration.
He was ordained to the Holy Priesthood of Jesus Christ on May 12, 1951, by the Most Reverend Edwin V. OHara, Archbishop of the former Diocese of Kansas City, in the Cathedral of Immaculate Conception. He celebrated his First Solemn Mass on Sunday, May 13, 1951, at St. Patrick Church in Kansas City, Missouri. Father Pattersons first assignment was as Associate Pastor at St. Augustine Church in Kansas City, Missouri from 1951 to 1954. For further studies, he was sent to the Catholic University of America in Washington, D.C. from 1954-1956, where he earned a Licentiate in Canon Law (JCL). He then attended the Pontifical University of St. Thomas Aquinas (the Angelicum) in Rome from 1956 to 1957, receiving his Doctorate in Canon Law (JCD) from that Dominican institution on June 27, 1957. Upon the creation of the Diocese of Jefferson City in 1956, Father Patterson became one of its founding fathers. On July 27, 1957, Father Patterson was appointed as the first rector of the newly established St. Thomas Aquinas Preparatory Seminary in Hannibal, where he also taught. Blessed Pope John XXIII named him a Papal Chamberlain in October 1959.
On January 20, 1960, Monsignor Patterson was assigned to the Chancery as head of the Diocesan Matrimonial Tribunal and as Vice Chancellor. He served in these capacities until August 1970. In May 1960, he was also named the diocesan Director of Vocations. On June 21, 1962, he was appointed pastor of St. Stanislaus Church, Wardsville. Then, on August 1, 1970, Monsignor Patterson was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church in Slater. He was appointed pastor of St. Joseph Church in Edina on July 15, 1977, with the additional responsibilities as pastor of the Parish of St. Aloysius in Baring beginning on August 1, 1981. On July 1, 1985, he was appointed pastor of Holy Spirit Church in Centralia where he served until 1992. The additional responsibility as temporary administrator of St. Joseph Parish, Martinsburg, was added on May 21, 1990. Monsignor Patterson was then appointed temporary administrator of St. Joseph Church in Westphalia on July 1, 1992, followed by his appointment as their pastor on April 26, 1993.
On June 1, 1997, he was appointed chaplain at St. Joseph Home for the Aged in Jefferson City until his retirement on May 15, 2005. Monsignor Patterson was appointed to the advisory board of the Missouri Catholic Conference by Bishop Joseph M. Marling, CPPS. For many years, he was the Ordinary Confessor for the Sisters of the Incarnate Word at St. Francis Xavier Convent in Taos, Missouri. He later served as a member of the Diocesan Mediation and Arbitration Board. Monsignor Patterson was Dean of the Mexico deanery from 1991 to 1995, then Dean of the Osage Deanery from 1995 to 1997. He had been a member and past president of the Diocesan Priests Senate. Monsignor Patterson celebrated his Silver Jubilee of Ordination to the Holy Priesthood on June 6, 1976, at St. Joseph Church in Slater. He celebrated his 40th Anniversary of Priesthood on May 12, 1991, with a Mass and reception at Holy Spirit Parish in Centralia. In 2001, Monsignor Patterson celebrated his Golden Jubilee of Ordination to the Holy Priesthood on several occasions, including a Mass at the Cathedral of St. Joseph and reception at St. Josephs Home in Jefferson City on May 6, 2001. A Mass of Thanksgiving was celebrated on May 13, 2001, at St. Patricks Church in Kansas City, the same church where he celebrated his First Solemn Mass.
The concelebrated Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, May 11, 2010, at 11 a.m. at the Cathedral of St. Joseph with the Most Reverend John R. Gaydos presider. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery in Jefferson City, Missouri. Visitation will be at the Cathedral of St. Joseph, Jefferson City, on Monday, May 10, 2010, from 4-8 pm, with the Vigil Liturgy at 7 p.m. Additional visitation will be 10-10:45 a.m. Tuesday at the Cathedral of St. Joseph.
