Mary Elizabeth Gratz

Mary Elizabeth Gratz, 87, of Taos, died Friday, November 28, 2014, at Capital Region Medical Center surrounded by her family. She was born October 12, 1927, in Cole Junction, Missouri, the daughter of the late Martin H. and Celeste Ann (Rackers) Twehous. She was a 1946 graduate of St. Peter High School. She was united in marriage on April 7, 1948, in Taos, Missouri to Robert Edward "Bob" Gratz who preceded her in death on December 27, 2001. A homemaker most of her life, she also was a timekeeper for Von Hoffman Press where she always remembered the employees clock number. She was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos. Mary was a prayer partner for the St. Francis Xavier School students. The students always looked forward to the holidays as they knew she would bring treats. Mary enjoyed embroidering quilt blocks for quilts she made for her children and grandchildren, working in her flower garden, and canning food. Mary will be remembered for baking her McKinney Oatmeal cookies. Mary and her husband Bob took pride in bettering their community and help to establish the Osage City Community Club. Survivors include: four children, Sharon Raithel (John Baclesse), Koeltztown; William "Bill" (Nancy) Gratz, Wardsville; Ruby (Jim) Radmacher, Taos; Roberta(Jimmy) Schnieders, Taos; ten grandchildren, Ed (Mandy) Raithel, Craig (Jayne) Gratz, Paul (Mandy) Raithel, Amy (Kevin) Wieberg, Eric (Kim) Radmacher, Tina Paschal (Scott Kilgore), Kim (Greg) Sandbothe, Scott (Shawna) Schnieders, Kristi (Jason) Harper, Lori Radmacher; 19 great-grandchildren; 2 step-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Frank (LaVerne) Twehous, Taos; Joe (Kay) Twehous, Jefferson City; and a sister-in-law, Leta Twehous, Jefferson City. She was also preceded in death by two brothers, Walter (Virginia) Twehous and Harold Twehous; a son-in-law, John Raithel; and a granddaughter-in-law, Mary Kay Gratz. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Monday, December 1, 2014, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Taos, with the Rev. Wayne M. Boyer officiating. Burial will be in St. Francis Xavier Catholic Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m. Additional visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Monday at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Francis Xavier Catholic School, 7307 Route M, Jefferson City, Mo 65101 or to a charity of the donor's choice.
