Maj. (Ret) Arthur Bernard Grawe

Maj. (Ret) Arthur Bernard Grawe, 82, of Jefferson City, died Saturday, December 8, 2018 at Westphalia Hills.

He was born on September 5, 1936, in Bowling Green, Missouri, the son of the late Andrew Bernard and Agnes Louise (Luebrecht) Grawe.

He was married on August 6, 1960, in New Haven, Missouri to Lorraine Mary Meyer who preceded him in death on January 28, 2009.

He retired from the United States Army in 1977. He began his service in 1957 working in the military police which included two three year deployments to Germany. Afterwards, he graduated from Officer Cadet School and flight training. He then served two tours of duty in the Vietnam War flying UH-1 Huey, Chinook (CH-47), and Cayuse (OH-6) helicopters. Often flying in dangerous combat zones, he earned several awards including the Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross Unit Citation with Palm, Bronze Star Medal with First Oak Leaf Cluster and the Army Aviator Badge. He continued his service as a flight training officer, flying the TH-55 helicopters, earning the Meritorious Service Award.

Arthur went to truck driving and heavy equipment school after his service career and worked for Twehaus Excavating, ACT, and OX Overnight Express. He trucked all over the country.

Arthur was a member of St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church; and the American Legion Post #0366.

He loved to drive, travel, and explore. He enjoyed horseback riding, in earlier years, with his wife. He always made sure his children were all doing well and were well taken care of.

Survivors include one daughter and son-in-law, Debbie and Jerry Stegeman, Loose Creek; two sons, Keith Grawe, Raton, New Mexico; Kevin Grawe, Jefferson City; eleven grandchildren, Brian (Meghan Wingate) Stegeman, J.T. (Kelly Kliethermes) Stegeman, Greg (Leslie Adams) Stegeman, Kimberly (Terrence) Stegeman, Chad Stegeman, Dylan Grawe, Tristan Grawe, Isabel Grawe, Jake Grawe, Jahn Moore-Grawe, Gary Grawe; four great-grandchildren, Ava
Wingate, Haley Titus, Noah Stegeman, and Jackson Stegeman and one sister-in-law, Evelyn Bauer, New Haven; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; son, Gary Grawe; daughter-in-law, Cathy Grawe; brother, Marvin (Thora) Grawe; sisters, Clara Ann (Louis) Niemeyer, Julia (Harry) Twellman and Mildred (Art) Dunston.

Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, December 14, 2018, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home in Jefferson City with a prayer service at 3:30 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, December 15, 2018, at St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church in Taos with the Rev. Michael W. Penn officiating.

Burial with military honors will be 3 p.m. Saturday at Assumption Catholic Cemetery in New Haven, Missouri.

Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimer’s Association, American Cancer Society, or to St. Francis Xavier Catholic Church.
