MARY JANE REDMON

August 11, 1916 — April 10, 2006

Mary Jane Redmon, 89, of Jefferson City, passed away Monday, April 10, 2006, at Capital Region Medical Center. She was born on Aug. 11, 1916 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Oliver and Margaret Louise Estes Shields. She was married in October, 1940, in Chillicothe, MO to Alonzo Louis Redmon, Sr. who died July, 1980. She was a graduate of Garrison High School in Chillicothe. A resident of Jefferson City for more than fifty years, Mary Jane was employed with Lincoln University for thirty years as director in both the womens and mens dormitories. Helping students find their way towards the future was a rewarding endeavor for her and she had received recognition for her efforts in being Mom to many students. Active in the community in various activities and organizations, she was a member of Second Baptist Church where she sang in the Chancel Choir for over forty years; served as chairperson of the Deaconess Board; and served on with the Food Committee. She was a member of Boone Chapter Order of Eastern Star where she served in a variety of positions. She was a twenty-five year member of the American Red Cross where she served two terms on the board and was active in area blood drives. She was a twenty-year volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels, and was a care-giver at Villa Marie Skilled Nursing Facility and Boy Scouts of America. She served on the Cole County Nutrition Board and the Jefferson City Day Care Board. She was a member of the Legislative Task Force of the American Association of Retired Persons. Mary found no one a stranger, particularly persons in need. For several years she was the taxicab for those needing transportation, be they youth going to day camps, church, Vacation Bible School, or well-seasoned persons needing rides to appointments. She enjoyed taking care of others daily needs. Survivors include one son, Dr. Alonzo L. Redmon, Jr., Greensboro, NC; one daughter, Jacquelyn Jackson, Jefferson City; two grandchildren, Elmer C. Jackson III; and Mary-Louise Redmon Jackson; five great-grandchildren, Ashley Francis, Kyree Jackson, Brione Jackson, Chantze Jackson, and Hallie Eaton; one brother, Oliver Vincent Shields, Lees Summit, MO; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many loved friends. She was preceded in death by one brother, Harold E. Shields; and one sister, Margaret L. Reid. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 14, 2006, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Cornell C. Sudduth, Sr. officiating. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday, April 13th, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.
