MARIA MAGDALENA LYSKOWSKI, M.D.

September 3, 1922 — May 4, 2005

Maria Magdalena Lyskowski, M.D., 82, a resident of Jefferson City since 1990, died peacefully on Wednesday, May 4, 2005, at her home. Dr. Lyskowski was born on Sept. 3, 1922, in Katowice, Poland, the daughter of Valentine and Maria Magdalena Menszczyzna. She was educated in Poland prior to World War II. As a war refugee in Hamburg, Germany, she received her medical degree while residing in a displaced persons camp. There she met and married Dr. Stephan Lyskowski, a Polish Army veteran and camp physician. He preceded her in death in 1968. The couple immigrated to the United States in 1950, initially settling in Chicago, then moving to southern Illinois. After thirteen years of being a homemaker and mother of three children, Dr. Lyskowski completed her internship at St. Lukes Hospital in St. Louis in 1965. She completed her psychiatric training at Barnes Hospital, and opened a private practice in Clayton, MO, in 1968. She moved to Columbia, MO, in the early 1970s where she took a position in clinical psychiatry at Mid-Missouri Mental Health Center and became assistant professor of psychiatry at the University of Missouri Medical School. In 1977, she moved to Cape Girardeau, MO, and was a staff psychiatrist with Saint Francis Mental Health. She later worked as a private practitioner in conjunction with Neurological Associates of Cape Girardeau until her semi-retirement in 1989. In 1990, she moved to Jefferson City. She continued part-time psychiatric consultation at the local mental health center, the New Horizons program, and the Social Security Disability Determination office. She retired fully in 2001. In her retirement, Dr. Lyskowski became a volunteer with Hospice of Jefferson City & Mid-Missouri, St. Marys Health Center, Samaritan Center, and Meals-on-Wheels. She was an active member of St. Joseph Cathedral, Learning in Retirement, Morning Music Club, and Council of Clubs. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, reading, and visiting with friends and family. Dr. Lyskowski is survived by her three grown children and their families: Roman Lyskowski, his wife, Elissa Vanaver, and their son, David, of Miami, Florida; Barbara Lyskowski Morgan, her husband, Jim Morgan, PhD., of Cape Girardeau, MO, and their son, Josh, and his wife, Julie Hodges, of St. Louis; John Lyskowski, M.D., his wife, Terry, of Jefferson City; and their children, Andrew, Jane, and Danny, all of Jefferson City; and Peter Lyskowski, his wife, Vickie, and their daughter, Isabella, of Columbia, MO. She will be lovingly missed by her family, friends, and former patients. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, May 7, 2005, at St. Joseph Cathedral, Jefferson City, with the Rev. David G. Buescher officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday, May 6th, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to Samaritan Center, 1310 E.
