Lois Glasscock May, 87, of Jefferson City, died Tuesday, May 10, 2016, at Primrose Retirement Community.
She was born on October 13, 1928, in Micola, Missouri, the daughter of the late John Madden and Annie Laurie (McCarey) Glasscock.
Lois spent her childhood in Caruthersville and Advance, Missouri. At the age of thirteen she moved to Mount Vernon, Illinois to live with her step-sister Pearl and her husband Hyman Caldwell who provider her the opportunity of an education.
She was married on January 7, 1951, in Mount Vernon, Illinois, to Frank Wallace May who preceded her in death on August 22, 2010.
Mrs. May was a graduate of Mount Vernon Township High School, MacMurray Women's College in Jacksonville, Illinois; received a Bachelor of Science degree in business administration with emphasis in fashion merchandising from Washington University in St. Louis; and a Bachelor of Education degree from Lincoln University.
She was employed as a middle school teacher in Bismarck, Missouri, and later taught middle school and high school in Russellville. She served for several years as the Director of the Missouri Governor's Mansion during the administrations of Kit Bond and with Carolyn Bond supervised the restoration of the mansion.
Lois was a passionate women who shared her love of gardening and floral arrangement with the public while at the Missouri Governor's Mansion and with family and friends. Much to the enjoyment of family and friends Lois shared a passion for researching and attempting new and different recipes and dishes. Lois and Frank loved to entertain. She enjoyed being in touch with her previous students and found joy in watching their careers and families grow. She found her greatest joy with her husband Frank when they would turn their home into a playground and classroom to care for their grandchildren, great grandchildren and God children.
She was a member of Peace United Church of Christ in Hartsburg.
Survivors include three children, Douglas (Sue) May, Jefferson City; Bruce (Janna) May, Bonne Terre, Missouri; and Jeanne (David) Smith, Jefferson City; seven grandchildren, Nicole (Dan) Dougan; Heather (Tony) Brown; Emylie May; Thomas (Margo) Smith; Christina (Luke) Lowenstein; Annie (Matthew) Bledsoe; and Amy (Patrick) Evans; and sixteen great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by one son, John Randolph May.
Visitation will be begin at 9 a.m. with funeral services at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 21, 2016, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with the Rev. James P. Mueller officiating.
A celebration of Lois's life will follow at Primrose Retirement Community, 1214 Freedom Court, Jefferson City.
Private family burial will be Sunday May 22 at St. Francois Memorial Park in Bonne Terre, Missouri.
