LEONARD PETER JAEGERS

April 8, 1921 — November 2, 2010

Leonard P. Jaegers, 89, of Jefferson City, died Tuesday, November 2, 2010, at the Harry S. Truman Memorial Veterans Hospital.
He was born April 8, 1921, in Meta, Mo., the son of the late Joseph Michael and Mary Josephine Hoerschgen Jaegers. He was united in marriage on December 27, 1945, in Meta, Mo., to Helen Marie Wankum who resides at the home. Leonard was a United States Army veteran serving during World War II. He received the European African Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon, Good Conduct Medal, WWII Victory Ribbon, Combat Infantry Badge, Bronze Star, and the Purple Heart.
Leonard was a clerk at the Meta Drug Store from 1952-1959 and later was the owner and manager of the Jaegers Shoe and Apparel Store from 1959-1985 retiring in the Fall of 1985. He was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, Holy Name Society, Oblate of Benedictine Sisters in Columbia, VFW Post 8045 in Argyle, Disabled American Veterans Oliver Buehrle Chapter 17, and Knights of Columbus Fourth Degree Honor Guard. While living in Meta, Leonard served on the City Council, School Board, and Parish Council. Leonard was an Osage County Committee Man, Human Development Corporation member in Linn, Mo., and a Board member of the American Red Cross. He enjoyed his family, traveling, playing cards, and volunteering over 15,000 hours at the VA Hospitals in Texas and Missouri.
Other survivors include: seven children, Robert (Helen) Jaegers; James (Betty) Jaegers; Charles (Sara) Jaegers; Joseph (Linda) Jaegers; Nancy (Tom) Suthoff; Diane (Mark) Boeckman, all of Jefferson City; Mary Jane Weigelt, Spokane, Wash.; 26 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and three siblings, Edgar (Delphine) Jaegers, St. Genevieve, Mo.; Jerome (Viola) Jaegers, Bloomsdale, Mo.; and Imelda (Willard) Riley, Vienna. He was preceded in death by two infant grandchildren; two sisters, Mary Ann Loethen and Lucille Veit; and a brother, Norman Jaegers.
Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, November 6, 2010, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Msgr. David D. Cox and the Rev. Patrick Adejoh officiating. Burial with full military honors will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home.
