Joyce Catherine Kaiser

December 13, 1947 — February 17, 2017

Joyce Catherine Kaiser, 69, of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, February 17, 2017, at Kansas University Hospital, Kansas City, Kansas. She was born December 13, 1947, in Jefferson City, Missouri, the daughter of the late Bernard Henry and Bernadine Helena (Kaiser) Suthoff. She was united in marriage on March 7, 1969, at St. Louis of France Catholic Church in Bonnots Mill, to Charles Edward Kaiser who survives at the home. A 1965 graduate of Helias High School, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology from Lincoln University in 1969. She also earned a Masters in Elementary Administration and a Specialist Degree in Elementary Administration from the University of Missouri in 1986. Joyce spent her career with the Jefferson City Public Schools, teaching for sixteen years and as an elementary principal for eighteen years. She was the first female principal in the Jefferson City Public Schools; but that achievement was dwarfed in comparison to the legacy she left behind. This week alone, the stories shared by principals, teachers, parents and students have a common thread; Joyce had a true and lasting influence on the direction of their lives. She was a selfless mentor to many and champion of every child. Joyce enjoyed just about everything life has to offer, and her zest for learning & growing in this life never ceased. But, primarily, Joyce lived her life to help others find their way. As a teacher. As a mentor. As a friend. As an aunt. As a sister. As a grandmother. As a mother and as a wife. Her greatest pleasure was caring for and helping others. Ever the teacher, she had a true talent for open-minded listening, asking thought-provoking questions, and guiding others to their own right answer. In addition to her devoted husband of 48 years, she is survived by three children, Sara Kaiser Truelson, Lenexa, KS; Paul Alan Kaiser, Parker, CO; and Andrew Bernard Kaiser, Lee Summit, MO; her children's spouses who loved Joyce dearly and consider her their second Mom, Nate Truelson, Melissa Kaiser and Holly Kaiser; six grandchildren, Charlie Truelson, Jackson Truelson, Bailey Kaiser, Jill Kaiser, Brady Kaiser, and Ellie Kaiser; and a fantastic brother and sister-in-law, Tom & Nancy Suthoff, Jefferson City. She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Agnes Meyer and a brother, Donald Suthoff. Visitation will be 4-8 p.m. Friday, February 24, 2017, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 3:15 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11 a.m. Saturday, February 25, 2017, at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Simeon A. Etonu officiating. All are welcome to join us as we gather to celebrate Joyce's life over lunch at the Knights of Columbus Hall following Mass. Memorials are suggested to the JCPS Foundation, Joyce Kaiser Memorial Fund, P.O. Box 2152, Jefferson City, MO 65102.
