Janet LaVerne Schroer

January 6, 1946 — April 13, 2020

Janet L. Schroer, 74, of Centertown, passed away Monday, April 13, 2020, at home.

Janet was born January 6, 1946, in Shelby County, Missouri, a rambunctious brunette who hit the ground running. She always preferred outdoor work to being in the house. As a basketball star at North Shelby High School where she graduated in 1964, she was outgoing, fun and a bit of a rebel.

In her 20s she attended Hannibal LaGrange College, moved to Jefferson City, met Dad and embraced his large family of 17 siblings.

She was united in marriage on December 23, 1967, in St. Martins, Missouri to Joseph A. Schroer who survives at home. She drove to California with her navy man, had 2 children, developed her interest in photography and immersed herself in family. She loved to drive and had the patience to teach this skill to her own children, grandchildren and others in her family.

She worked for Missouri Farm Bureau, Missouri Chamber of Commerce, Missouri Conservation Department, and retired from the State of Missouri Department of Social Services, Budget and Finance.

She was a member of St. Martin Catholic Church.

Family was always the most important thing to her. Having experienced loss at a young age, she wanted nothing more than to be there for her children. She cherished her relationships with her sister Judy and her family of boys, her grandma Swisher, her very special aunt and uncle who cared for her, and their daughters, as well as, her mother-in-law who loved to play Scrabble with her.

She felt completely blessed with her children and grandchildren. Her favorite days were taking them to Mizzou women’s basketball games, watching them all do what they did best, and proudly cheering on each of them in their endeavors.

She spent her days gardening, tomatoes and onions preferred, preparing signature chili and lasagna dishes, constructing many puzzles, Elvis, watching football, and playing Fantasy Football with her children, grandchildren and nephews. How ‘bout those Chiefs! Quick witted and a sharp tongue, she always let you know what she thought.

She is survived by her husband Joseph A. Schroer, Centertown, her children, Joel (Shannon) Schroer, St. Martins; Julie (Kevin) Paul, Clarkston, Michigan; six grandchildren Alec, Carson, Kaitlyn, Addison, Josie and Boston; and one sister, Judith Travis, Columbia.

She was preceded in death by her parents Charles Raymond and Etta Lois (Swisher) Smith, her brother Kenneth Raymond Smith, her uncle and aunt, Glen (Addie) Swisher; in-laws, Joseph and Loretta Schroer; and brother-in-law, Frank Travis.

Private family services were held at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home. A celebration of life service will be held at a later date.

Memorial contributions are suggested to St. Martin Catholic Parish, or to Little Box of Sunshine.
