Helen Marie Schanzmeyer

Helen Marie Schanzmeyer, 91, Jefferson City, passed away Sunday, August 29, 2021, at Capital Region Medical Center.

Helen was born December 8, 1929, in Jefferson City, the daughter of William Jennings Bryan and Altha May (Ricker) Woody.

She was married in Meta, Missouri August 4, 1951, to Gilbert Joseph Schanzmeyer, who died October 17, 2014, after 63 wonderful years.

As a child she attended Fairview Central Grade School, and Simenson High School in Jefferson City. The family later moved to Meta where she graduated in 1948 from Meta High School as Salutatorian. There were eight graduates, Helen was the last survivor. After graduating, she attended a Business School in St. Louis, then worked for Missouri State Employment Security and Missouri State Farm Bureau. She was a stay-at-home mom till her last child finished grade school, then she and Gilbert attended many real estate classes. Helen worked as a Broker-Salesperson for Coldwell-Banker Gordon Company Realtors for thirteen years during which she had the honor of twice being voted by her peers as Salesperson of the Year. She was a co-owner of DeVille Southwest Properties in Jefferson City.

Helen was a member of the Cathedral of St. Joseph, a former officer of the Cathedral Women’s Association and offered her prayers weekly at the Perpetual Adoration Chapel when it started in 1986. She was one of the original members of Learning in Retirement and the LIR Creative Writer’s Club, when she wrote and self-published a book about her dad. She and Gilbert belonged to SSM Health St. Mary’s Auxiliary and St. Mary’s Health Center Mended Hearts Inc., Chapter 204 program, visiting heart patients in the hospital. Helen especially liked doing crafts and sewing, making many quilts for her family and friends.

Gilbert and Helen adored their children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, always looking forward to the holidays when they would all be together.

After Gilbert’s passing, Helen went to live at Primrose Retirement Community in 2016. She loved it there, she made so many friends and enjoyed all the activities, educational and social, especially games of all kinds, dime bingo, and her poker buddies.

Survivors include four children, Ruth (Bill) Staton, Ponder, Texas; Ross (Linda) Schanzmeyer, Jefferson City; Colette Tellman, Jefferson City; and Joseph (Cynthia) Schanzmeyer, Lake Ozark; ten grandchildren, William (Courtney) Stanton, Patrick (Tyne) Stanton, Jennifer (George) Tergin, Ryan (Johnna) Schanzmeyer, Brooke (Samuel) Wallace, Erin (Michael) Kliethermes, Vanessa (Eric) Stuckenschneider, Amanda (Gabriel) Keilholz, Tyler (Maggie) Schanzmeyer, Aaron (Paige) Schanzmeyer, ten step-grandchildren; fourteen great-grandchildren; and twenty-two step-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Gilbert; a son, Paul Schanzmeyer; a son-in-law, Eddie Tellman; and a sister, Evelyn (Kelles) Barnhart.

Visitation will be 4:30-7:00 p.m. Friday, September 3, 2021, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 4 p.m.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Saturday, September 4, 2021, at the Cathedral of St. Joseph with the Rev. Louis Nelen officiating. Burial will be in St. Cecelia Catholic Cemetery in Meta, Missouri at 2 p.m., Saturday, September 4, 2021, with the Rev. Leonard Mukiibi officiating.

Memorials are suggested to Cathedral of St. Joseph Foundation or St. Cecilia Cemetery, Meta, Missouri.
