Helen Louise Johnson

Mrs. Helen Louise Johnson, age 87, of Jefferson City, passed away Wednesday, March 6, 2013, at Capital Region Medical Center. She was born January 25, 1926, in Wadesboro, North Carolina, to Randolph Watkins and Ethel Louise Holley who preceded her in death. Helen received a High School Diploma in 1943 from Stratton High School in Beckley, West Virginia. In 1948, she earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Business Administration from Hampton Institute, Hampton, Virginia. She was united in marriage in June, 1954 to Dr. Norman Jack Johnson who also preceded her in death on November 1, 1986. To this blessed union, one son was born, Michael Oliver Johnson. She began her professional career in Jefferson City working as an Administrative Assistant for State Representative DeVerne L. Calloway of St. Louis. For seven years, she was employed in the business office at Lincoln University in Jefferson City as Disbursing Supervisor and Assistant to the Vice President for Fiscal Affairs. She was later employed as Director of Veterans Affairs and Assistant Director of Financial Aid at Beckley College in Beckley, West Virginia. Helen was inducted into the Beta Pi Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., West Virginia in Spring 1952. She held a Golden Life membership and was an active member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., for 60 years. She served as Regional Director of the Central Region from 1978 to 1982, and was the current co-chair of the Regional Directors' Connection. Nationally, she was a member of the Constitution and By-Laws Committee. On the local level, she served as President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Membership Chairperson in various chapters in the Midwest, Southwest, and Central Regions. While Helen served as chair of the Jefferson City Alumnae Chapter Social Actions Committee, a forum was hosted by the chapter that led to many dialogues on fair housing in the Jefferson City community. She received several community service and leadership awards from Greek letter and civic organizations, the Governor of the State of Missouri, and Boy Scouts of America. She was a member of the NAACP, Missouri Association for Social Welfare, Cole County Democratic Women's Association, National Council for Negro Women, Missouri Academy of Science, and Black Women's Agenda. She was a past president of the Southern West Virginia Chapter of Links, Inc. She was a faithful member of Grace Episcopal Church, Jefferson City, Missouri for more than 40 years. Helen leaves to cherish her memories, a devoted son, Dr. Michael O. Johnson, and his wife Lisa, three loving grandchildren, Lauren Johnson, Lindsey Johnson, and Megan Scott, all of St. Charles, Missouri; her beloved sorority, church family, and friends. Visitation will be 3-6 p.m., Thursday, March 14, 2013 at Second Baptist Church, 501 Monroe Street, Jefferson City, Missouri, Reverend Cornell C. Sudduth Sr., Pastor. Additional visitation will be 10-11 a.m. Friday at Grace Episcopal Church. Funeral services will be 11:00 a.m. Friday, March 15, 2013, Grace Episcopal Church, 217 Adams Street, Jefferson City, Missouri, with The Reverend Shariya Molegoda officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Delta Sigma Theta Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 1303, Jefferson City, Missouri 65102-1303.
