Georgia Marie Cureton

Georgia Marie Cureton, 99, of Jefferson City, passed away Friday, August 25, 2017, at SSM Health St. Marys Hospital. She was born June 20, 1918, in Martinsburg, Missouri, the daughter of the late William Harrison Horace and Mary Frances (Kemp) Bodkins. She was a 1936 graduate of Sumner High School in St. Louis and a 1938 graduate of Illinois Business College. She was united in marriage on June 28, 1953, in Jefferson City to Robert DeWitt Cureton. In 1971 they adopted a son, Eric. Robert preceded her in death on October 12, 1994. Georgia worked for over 40 years at Lincoln University in various positions including Secretary to the Business Manager at the time of her retirement. A woman of compassion, strong mind and will, Mrs. Cureton loved and cared deeply about people(especially children), and their conditions. She never met a stranger. She greatly enjoyed and loved music of all kind, especially singing. She had a great passion for gardening and grew beautiful flowers which she shared. She loved being on the "go" and hardly missed anything. A staunch supporter of her Church and Lincoln University, she was always in attendance at church service and other church activities. She attended Lincoln's football games, homecoming activities, concerts, programs, and many other activities. A devout Christian, Georgia has been a member of her "beloved" Second Baptist Church since 1940, where she was active in the Chancel Choir, Drama Ministry, Bible Study Class, Vacation Bible School, Senior Adults, Womens Missionary Union, Estella B. Diggs Missionary Circle, the Church Decorating Committee where she would adorn the Church with flowers from her garden, and past treasurer of Church Women United. She also was a Life Member of the Jefferson City Chapter of the NAACP and a Board Member of Juneteenth - Jefferson City. She volunteered at St. Marys Hospital, Villa Marie Nursing Center, and Memorial Hospital. In April 2016, Georgia was honored with the "Special Appreciation" award at Lincoln University's 14th Annual President's Gala Awards and Auction Sesquicentennial Soiree. She is survived by her adopted son, Eric Cureton; loving cousins Calvin Kemp, Wellsville, MO; Roanna Johnson, Blue Island, IL; Cordia Mahaney, Martinsburg, MO; Olivia George, Mexico, MO; Carrie Simmons, Los Angeles, CA; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other extended family members. She will be greatly missed by her Church family, Dear and loving friends Rev. W. T., Gwen, and "T" Edmonson; and Rev. John and Eunice Harris, her devoted caregivers, and many, many beloved friends. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and three siblings, William Bodkins, Zeno Bodkins, and Mildred Bodkins. Visitation will be 10 a.m. to 12 noon Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Second Baptist Church. Funeral service will be 12 noon Saturday, September 2, 2017, at Second Baptist Church in Jefferson City with Rev. Cornell C. Sudduth, Sr., officiating. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Memorials are suggested to Second Baptist Church, 501 Monroe Street, Jefferson City, MO 65101.
