GEORGENA JOAN SAPPINGTON

Georgena Joan Sappington, 90, of Jefferson City, died Saturday, May 24, 2008, at Westphalia Retirement Center. She was born on April 8, 1918, in Vienna, Mo., the daughter of Ralph Edgar and Maud Marie Murphy Crismon. A 1936 graduate of Jefferson City High School, Mrs. Sappington retired in 1981 as Secretary to the Adjutant General of the Missouri Air National Guard where she was employed for twenty-eight years. She was a member of First United Methodist Church for over fifty years, and was a volunteer with both the church and the former Memorial Hospital. Following her divorce from Robert Spencer Sappington, Sr., whom she married in 1940 in Jefferson City, she raised her two sons, Spencer and Cris, in whom she instilled a love for music and sports. She enjoyed gardening and dancing, and loved the times spent with her family on the Gasconade River in Maries County. Survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, Spencer and Debi Sappington, Milton, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Nancy Sappington Jones, Jefferson City; four grandchildren, Spencer Sappington, III, Birmingham, Ala.; Eric Sappington, Oceanside, Ore.; Adam Sappington, Portland, Ore.; and Audrey Sappington Allen, Gardendale, Ala.; seven great-grandchildren; one sister and two brothers-in-law, Ronda and James Vecchio, Grand Prairie, Texas; and Carl Sommerer, Jefferson City; and several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by parents; one son, Cris Sappington; one brother, Forrest Buddy Crismon; and three sisters, Bonnie Crismon Sommerer, Virginia Crismon Halsted, and Doris Mae Crismon Garland. Memorial services will be 11 a.m. Friday, May 30, 2008, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel P. Hilty officiating. Burial will be in Vienna Public Cemetery.
