Elizabeth Ann Kleene

Elizabeth Ann "Betty" Kleene, 87, of Jefferson City, died Friday, September 5, 2014, at her residence. She was born on December 23, 1926, in Millwood, Missouri, the daughter of the late Francis Lewis and Ethel Clare (Robey) Grothaus. She was united in marriage on September 4, 1948, in San Francisco, Ca., to George C. Smith who preceded her in death on March 8, 1955. She later married Joseph Fredric Kleene in Jefferson City on August 27, 1960 who died on April 18, 2011. Betty worked for the Milo H. Walz Drapery Department for 19 years. She also had worked for Convenient Food Mart for 7 years. She was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. Survivors include: one son, Joseph Francis Kleene, Jefferson City; a daughter, Victoria Lynn Smith, Columbia, MO; three grandchildren, Nathan Smith, Cory McCarter, and Stella McCarter; one brother, Robert Grothaus, San Mateo, Fl.; and a sister-in-law, Marge Grothaus, Bowling Green. She was also preceded in death by a son, Dennis Smith; a grandson, Micah McCarter; two sisters, Ethelreda McClatchey and Mary Cole; and two brothers, Bill and Joe Grothaus. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, September 9, 2014, at St. Peter Catholic Church with the Rev. Alex Gabriel officiating. Burial will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 9-10 a.m. Tuesday at the church. Memorials are suggested to St. Peter Catholic Church, 216 Broadway Street, Jefferson City, Mo 65101.
