Doris Mae Wankum

Doris Mae Wankum, 90, of Jefferson City, passed away Tuesday, August 8, 2017, at Heisinger Bluffs. She was born January 12, 1927, in Argyle, Missouri, the daughter of the late Edwin Vincent and Genevieve Catherine (Renfert) Wildhaber. Doris attended elementary school in Argyle and was a graduate of the 1945 high school class in Freeburg. She was united in marriage on February 19, 1949, at St. Peter Catholic Church in Jefferson City to Gregory Anthony Wankum who survives. A homemaker after her marriage, she previously was employed as a private secretary for the Capital City Telephone Company and the Missouri Department of Insurance. Doris was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and volunteered her time for her church as secretary for Immaculate Conception parish council, member of St. Anns Sodality, Immaculata Club, choir, and member of the Legion of Mary. She also took great pleasure in helping decorate the church. She served on the Board of Directors of Red Cross, Jefferson City YMCA (charter member since 1970), American Lung Association, YMCA Lifeline Honorary Lifetime membership, Mentor for Lifeline, counselor for Interfaith Day Camp, den mother for Cub Scouts, Hawthorne Garden Club, YMCA Masters Swim Program, recipient of the YMCA Dedicated Service Award, YMCA High Producer Award for Membership Campaign, Water Safety Chairman for Red Cross, Swim instructor for Family Asthma Program for the American Lung Association, Teachers Aide at Vogelweid Learning Center, and was a swim instructor for the Red Cross Program for the mentally and physically challenged participants. Doris enjoyed exercising, gardening, gentle yoga, swimming, and she especially loved fishing at their cabin on the Gasconade River and growing flowers and arranging them. Survivors include her husband of 68 years, Gregory Anthony Wankum, Jefferson City; a daughter, Geralyn Ann Wankum, Jefferson City; a son, Gregory Gerard Wankum, Jefferson City; two sisters, Bernice Schmitz, Argyle and Marceline Branum, Jefferson City; two brothers, Kenneth Wildhaber, Jefferson City and Francis (Mary Ann) Wildhaber, Freeburg; and a sister-in-law, Arlene Wildhaber, Jefferson City. She was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, Ralph Wildhaber; two brothers-in-law, Victor Schmitz and Ralph Branum; and a sister-in-law, Laurine Wildhaber. Visitation will be 10-11:00 a.m., Friday, August 11, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church. Mass of Christian Burial will be 11:00 a.m., Friday, August 11, 2017, at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church with the Rev. Csar Anicama officiating. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum. Memorials are suggested to Masses or a Charity of the Donors Choice. Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
