DOLORES LEHMEN PROST WEIMAN

Dolores Lehmen Prost Weiman, age 74, passed away on March 17, 2006 at her home in Jefferson City. She was surrounded by her family and was at peace following a nearly four-year battle with sarcoma. Dolores was born on August 8, 1931 in Osage Bend, MO, the daughter of Joseph H. Lehmen and Henrietta Haselhorst Lehmen. She grew up in Osage Bend and Jefferson City. Because her mother died of tuberculosis when Dolores was six years old, she was raised by her Dad, her Grandma Lizzie Lehmen and several aunts she called her other mothers Annie Haselhorst Lindenbusch, Hilda Lehmen Brooks, Elizabeth Luebbering Lehmen, and Alvina Lehmen Kaullen. She had one younger brother, Larry, who died in 1952. She graduated from St. Peter High School in 1949, leaving the next day to attend Central Missouri State University. The following September she became the first lay teacher for the Jefferson City Catholic Schools, teaching at St. Peter and later at Immaculate Conception and St. Joseph. She continued taking summer school classes at Lincoln University during the 1950s and 1960s. For many years she was a substitute teacher and also taught CCD. In 1951 Dolores married J. Jay Prost, and they had three children: Joetta, Evan and Warren. Their 42 years of marriage focused on family, church, and community in addition to the construction business that Jay and his brother Paul owned. Some of their community service activities included Rape Abuse Crisis Center, Search youth retreats, refugee resettlement, Juvenile Attention Center, Girl Scouts, Job Corp students, and Hospice of Jefferson & Mid-Missouri. Dolores church-related activities included Liturgy Committee, Charter member of the St. Joseph Cathedral Foundation, Directions 80, Centering Prayer, and Voice of the Faithful. In 1974 Jay and Dolores co-founded Jefferson City Marriage Encounter, initiating local weekend marriage enrichment seminars for couples of all faiths. They served in various leadership roles within Marriage Encounter until Jays death on October 4, 1993. In 1995, Dolores married John R. Weiman, who survives her. Her family expanded to include her husbands nine children and their families. John and Dolores traveled extensively, with adventures to China, Korea, Portugal, Mexico and many other places. Dolores liked to say Old teachers never die, they just keep on teaching! An avid reader, she believed that being educated and educating others was important throughout life. She returned to college, graduating in 1977 with a Psychology degree from Stephens College. She was Activity Director for Oak Tree Villas (1984-1985). While working as Patient Representative at Still Hospital (1986-1991), she obtained her M.Ed. degree in Counseling and Guidance from Lincoln University. After completion of her graduate degree, Dolores formed Myers Briggs & More and provided training seminars for business, state government and community groups. In 1992 Dolores was a founding member and first president of the Lincoln University Learning in Retirement program. Dolores definition of education was not limited to the formal classroom. In 1987 at age 56 she challenged herself physically and mentally by completing an Outward Bound course involving backpacking, rappelling, rafting, and survival skills. She described Outward Bound as a life-changing experience that rekindled her love of the outdoors. She continued bicycling, hiking and travel adventures until shortly before her death, including taking her grandchildren on an Elderhostel adventure in the Teton Mountains. Dolores is survived by her husband, John, and her three children: Joetta Prost and her partner Kathy Shell of Atlanta, Georgia; Evan Prost and Claire Garden of Columbia; Warren and Debbie Prost and their children, John G. Prost and Eva C. Prost also of Columbia. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, March 22, 2006, at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph with the Rev. David G. Buescher officiating. Burial will be in St. Margaret Cemetery, Osage Bend. The family hopes everyone will join them for a meal in the St. Margaret Parish Hall. There will be music and laughter as we celebrate Dolores life.
