DAVID RICHARD NEWSAM

David Richard Newsam, 92, of Lees Summit, Mo., formerly of Jefferson City, died Saturday, April 18, 2009, at the John Knox Village Care Center in Lees Summit. He was born on Dec. 9, 1916, the first child of John Richard and Elizabeth Bessie Noteis Newsam. He was married on May 3, 1942, in Kansas City, Mo., to Harriet Elizabeth Jackson who died on Sept. 14, 1947. He later married Opal Nadine Adkison on April 25, 1953, who survives at the home. Mr. Newsam attended St. Peter Catholic School; was a 1935 graduate of Jefferson City High School; attended Jefferson City Community College and Capital Community College; and graduated in 1939 from the Dunwoodie Industrial Institute and School of Baking and Milling in Minneapolis, Minn. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II where he served as Commander of the 111th Quarter Master Baking Company which operated five bakeries producing 100,000 pounds of bread per day in the India and Burma theaters. He held the rank of Major at the time of his discharge. Mr. Newsam was employed in his early years with the Cottage Maid Bakery, and purchased the Goldcup Bakery in 1946. In 1961 he purchased the Columbia Baking Company which he operated until 1968. Over the years he was a consultant to various grocery stores interested in installing bakery departments, and to insurance companies handling large bakery fire claims. He later assisted in millwright work required in the installation of machinery during construction of the Westinghouse plant in Jefferson City. He served as Cole County Western District Commissioner from 1975-1979, and as Cole County Recorder of Deeds from 1978 to 1995 where his frugality with public funds was legendary. He was a recipient of the Blair Award for service, loyalty, and dedication to Missouri Government. Mr. Newsam was a member of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph in Jefferson City where he served on the first Church Council and as an usher. He was a charter member of the Dan C. Coppin Fourth Degree Assembly, Knights of Columbus. During his years in Lees Summit he was a member of Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church. He was a past president of the Jefferson City Lions Club and the Missouri Bakers Association; served as vice-president of the Jefferson City Chamber of Commerce; and vice chairman of Cole County Residential Services for fourteen years. He was a member of the Lions Club Eye Research Foundation, Capital City China-Burma-India Veterans Association, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2693, Roscoe Enloe American Legion Post No. 5, and Roy Sone Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 1003. Through the years he was an active member of the Democratic Party; Cole County Library Board; and Reserve Officers Association. His greatest enjoyment during retirement was serving for many years on the Cole County Special Services board where he was instrumental in planning and supervising the construction of six homes serving seventy clients. In 2006 the Newsam Memorial Garden and Walking Trail was dedicated in his honor at one of the group homes. When his wifes health required their move to the John Knox Village in Lees Summit, he was known as The Pie Man for the twenty pies he would bake each week by hand. He was a member of the Holy Donuts at Our Lady of the Presentation Catholic Church and conducted their Pie Ministry program. Other survivors include one son and daughter-in-law, John W. and Susan Newsam, Lees Summit, Mo.; two grandchildren, Leslie Newsam and Paige Newsam, both of New York City; and one sister, Dorothy Woodcock, Spartanburg, S.C. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, April 24, 2009, at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph with the Rev. Msgr. Robert A. Kurwicki officiating. Interment with military honors will be in Resurrection Cemetery. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Thursday, April 23rd, at Dulle-Trimble Funeral Home with a prayer service at 7 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Alzheimers Association Mid-Missouri Chapter, 2400 Bluff Creek Drive, Columbia, MO 65201; the Carmelite Monastery, 2201 W.
