CATHERINE ROSE MERTENS

Catherine Rose Mertens, 76, of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, July 2, 2008, at University Hospital. She was born on Oct. 28, 1931, in Cole county, the daughter of Roy C. and Rose Catherine Markway Stockman. She was united in marriage on Oct. 4, 1952, in Jefferson City to Roger Theodore Mertens who preceded her in death on April 2, 2006. Mrs. Mertens was the co-owner and founder of Roger Mertens Distributing in 1961, Roger Mertens Boat Sales in 1964, and Cold Cube Ice Co. in 1975 which was later sold in 1984. Catherine was a member of the Cathedral of Saint Joseph. She helped with Meals-On-Wheels and St. Joseph Cathedral and School. She enjoyed baking, cooking, sewing, crocheting, gardening, and especially her grandchildren. Survivors include: two daughters and their husbands, Marilyn and Darrell Garmer, St. Louis; and Sharon and Mark Alexander, Marshfield, Mo.; five sons and their wives, Larry Mertens and his fiance, Laurie Pleus; Gerald and Kerri Mertens; Greg and Laura Mertens; John and Michelle Mertens; and Glenn Mertens, all of Jefferson City; seven grandchildren, Justin Raithel; Jayme Mertens; Mackenzie Mertens; Lexi Mertens; Luke Mertens; Tanner Mertens; and Megan Mertens; one step-grandson, Cheston Alexander; two sisters and their husbands, Ida and C.T. Bud Mertens, Westphalia; and Alice and J.B. DeWesplore, Wardsville; three brothers and their wives, Willard and Gerry Stockman, Jefferson City; Fred and Kay Stockman, Wardsville, Mo.; and Francis and Shirley Stockman, Wardsville; and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Stockman and Dolores Stockman, both of Jefferson City. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; and three brothers, infant Cletus Stockman; Leroy Stockman; and Dave Stockman. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, July 8, 2008, at the Cathedral of Saint Joseph with the Rev. Msgr. Robert A. Kurwicki officiating. Burial will be in Resurrection Cemetery.
