CARL NORTH SMITH

September 14, 1935 — July 19, 2006

Carl North Smith, 70, of Jefferson City, died Wednesday, July 19, 2006, at Capital Region Medical Center. He was born on Sept. 14, 1935 in Sherman, TX, the son of Leland George and Hallie Will Walton Smith. He was married on Dec. 23, 1956 in Tulsa, OK, to Obera Mann who survives at the home. Mr. Smith was a 1952 graduate of Lincoln University Lab School; received a Bachelor of Science degree from Lincoln University in 1956; was later awarded a Master of Science degree from the University of Missouri in Columbia and a Master of Arts degree in Guidance and Counseling from Lincoln University. He was a forty-nine year employee of Memorial Community Hospital and Capital Region Medical Center where he served as a microbiologist. He was a twenty-year member of the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Smith was a member of Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church where he served as an usher and member of the Board of Trustees and Steward Board. He was a fifty-two year member of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity and served in various capacities at Lincoln University, including Lincoln University Foundation Board, past president of Lincoln University National Alumni Association, and past president of Jefferson City Alumni Association. He was also a member of Jefferson City Jaycees. He was a former counselor at the Jefferson City Juvenile Detention Center, now known as Prenger Family Center, and taught microbiology at the Missouri Department of Corrections. Other survivors include three daughters and two sons-in-law, Phaedra and Joseph Hardaway, Jefferson City; Pilar and Brandon McKinney, Chicago, IL; and Pari Smith, St. Louis, MO; one son, Carl N. Smith, II, Jefferson City; seven grandchildren, Joseph Hardaway, Kearston Hardaway, Karissa Hardaway, Joshua Hardaway, Jela McKinney, Jiri McKinney, and Brandon McKinney; one sister, Ann E. Smith, Chicago, IL; and one brother and sister-in-law, Ivan T. and Betty Smith, Kansas City, KS. He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Leland Walton Smith. Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Monday, July 24, 2006, at Second Baptist Church with the Rev. Freda Cash Bady and the Rev. Cornell C. Sudduth, Sr. officiating. Burial with military honors will be in Hawthorn Memorial Gardens. Visitation will be 6-8 p.m. Sunday, July 23rd, at Quinn Chapel A.M.E. Church with memorial rites conducted by Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity at 7:30 p.m. Memorials are suggested to the Smith Family Fund at Lincoln University Foundation, 820 Chestnut Street, Jefferson City, MO 65102.
